Podcast Show Notes: Fight Stroke Now had the opportunity to speak with two-time stroke survivor Geraldine Shaw from the United Kingdom(UK). Ms. Shaw is a former science lecturer in the UK and was able to describe her stroke episode and offer great wisdom to pass on to others on becoming their own healthcare advocate. The Fight Stroke Now mission of training patients, caregivers and healthcare advocates for reduced stroke disabilities and higher quality of life greatly resonated with Ms. Shaw’s message on patient empowerment.

Did you know that stroke signs and outcomes may be different in women?
- 53.5% of the estimated 795,000 new or recurrent strokes occur in women annually (American Heart Association)
- 6 in 10 people who die from stroke are women. (CDC Stroke & Women)
- Over a third of stroke survivors in the UK are dependent on others, of those 1 in 5 are cared for by family and/or friends. (State of the Nation Stroke Statistics Report-UK)
- Younger women may have different stroke symptoms of stroke such as dizziness or headaches than women 46 or older do. (CDC Stroke & Women)
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke is the leading cause of long term disability in the US. Stroke costs about $34 billion each year including various healthcare services and time away from work. These statistics alone show there is more that needs to be done to achieve better patient outcomes from the effects of stroke. Fight Stroke Now goes beyond awareness… it is empowered training!
