In 1995, my grandmother died from the effects of stroke due to her high blood pressure. A year later my dear Aunt Pat died from a stroke only after a couple months of having the baby girl she always wanted. Today, I am on a mission to provide knowledge and empowerment to everyone to be their own healthcare advocate.
In memory of my grandmother and aunt pat take these three actions today.
- Take your blood pressure. Is it high? If so please make a doctor’s appointment asap with your healthcare provider to get it under control. The new hypertension guideline is blood pressure reading of 130/80 or higher.
- On your next doctor visit, don’t be intimated to ask questions about anything that is not clear to you. Tip: Write down possible questions before your visit
- Locate your local stroke center and let your loved ones know about any near them as well. Locate Stroke Center
